Father’s Alternative Diaper Bag

by steve on October 8th, 2006

One of the things about being a modern day dad is you need to change diapers. Both parents get involved in this exercise in most cases. Especially as a stay at home dad I do diaper changing quite often. So I get asked a ton of times what I use for a diaper bag when I head off to the park or go out in public. I canned the traditional diaper bag and got me something more practical. It isn’t exactly like the one here in the picture but it is similar. Mine does have a strap that I sling over the opposite shoulder.

Some of things you want to remember is carry plenty of plastic bags. Funny how when the real nasty one comes there isn’t a trashcan in sight. Double it up if you have to. Yea I know, nasty stuff. Have several compartments. You don’t want the sippy cup resting up snug and nice next to a bag of dirty diapers. agh!

Big is ok, as long as it is practical to cart around.

But go ahead and click on the following link to read more about this one. You wear this one on the belt. Probably could slide a screwdriver in there. :D

I was getting tired of carrying around a diaper bag and a little cooler type lunch bag everywhere I went. It was a real strain on my shoulder and an inconvenience. I really needed something to carry diapers and such in, but I also needed a cooler type bag for their sippy cups. I found the perfect solution. I am using a large cooler/lunchbox. It has a large compartment for their snacks, sippy cups, and ice packs. Then it has a pocket on the front where I keep a few diapers and wipes. Although this is very convenient for me, it does not hold everything, but I’ve always tried to get an emergency box in the car. In it I keep extra diapers, wipes, changes of clothes, and such.

I never thought of a cooler like that. The bag in the photo would be real nice for around the house and stuff. I am not sure I would wear that to the park or the store.

But whatever I use I need several compartments :D

Well, now that my youngest one is over a year old I no longer need something huge for all of the bottles. I’m glad to be out of that stage of having to carry all the formula, bibs, burp cloths, and bottles. What a relief!

[…] But let’s all welcome Jerry Steele to the new Stay at Home Dad club. If there is any assistence we can help you with… then we’ll do the best we can. 1st advice, get a nice cool diaper bag. One of my biggest pet peeves when I first started staying home was the diaper bag. Man, I didn’t want to be seen in public with that thing. Kid decorated and everything. Sorry folks but the diaper bag is not a toy and not for the baby, it is for the grown up such as myself. So get a nice black or gray diaper back and stock it like a guy. I even posted one here not too long ago. […]
